Origin: Back of Neck
ligamentum nuchae and spine of 7th cervical vertebrae
Origin: Back of Thorax
Spines of all thoracic vertebrae and their supraspinous ligaments
Insertion: Upper Fibres
Inserted into lateral third of clavicle
Insertion: Middles Fibres
Inserted into acromion and upper lip of crest of spine of scapula
Insertion: Lower Fibres
Inserted into rough tubercle on crest of spine of scapula near root of spine
Nerve Supply
Motor: Spinal Root of Accessory Nerve
Sensory: Cervical Nerves # 3 & 4
Action
As A Whole
Upper & Lower Fibres
Middle Fibres
As A Whole: Maintains Level of Shoulder
Upper & Lower Fibres: Rotate Scapula so Glenoid Cavity looks Upward
Acts w/ Rhomboids: Middle Fibres: Retract Scapula and Brace Back Shoulder
