Muscles of the Back Flashcards
Muscles of superficial layer
trapezuis and latissimus dorsi
muscles of deep layer
levator scapulae
rhomboideus major
rhomboideus minor
trapezius covers the
upper half of the back from both sides
origin of trapezius
- back of skull : from protuberance and superior nuchal line
- back of neck : from ligamentum nuchae and spine of 7th cervical vertebra
- back of thorax : from spine of all thoracic vertebrae supraspinous ligaments
insertion of trapezius
V shaped insertion
- upper fibres : inserted to clavicle
- middle fibres : inserted to acromion and upper lip of crest of spine of scapula
- lower fibres : inserted into rough tubercle on crest of spine of scapula (near the root)
insertion of trapezius is surrounded by
V shaped origin of deltoid
nerve supply of trapezius
motor: spinal root of accessory nerve
sensory : cervical nerve number 3 & 4
action of trapezius
- maintains level of shoulder
- upper fibres elevate shoulder girdle
- upper and lower fibers rotate scapula so glenoid cavity looks upward
- middle fibres act with rhomboid to retract scapula and brace the shoulder
paralysis of trapezius leads to
shoulder drop
latissimus dorsi
flat muscle that covers lower half of back down to iliac crest
origin of latissimus dorsi
fleshy fibres from:
- posterior third of outer lip of iliac crest
- spines of lower 6 thoracic vertebrae
- thoraco-lumbar fascia
- outer surface of lower 4 ribs
- few fibres from dorsal aspect of scapula
TRIVS
insertion of latissimus dorsi
into floor of bicipital groove
nerve supply of latissimus dorsi
thoraco-dorsal nerve
action of latissimus dorsi
- extension, medial rotation, and adduction of arm
- act with sternocostal part of pectoralis major, pulls trunk upward
- attaches to ribs and helps in violent expiration like coughing
upper border of latissimus dorsi crosses over
inferior angle of scapula and has triple relation to teres major
it lies behind it then curves below it then goes in front of it.
the latissimus dorsi fuses with ______ to form
teres major to form posterior axillary fold
triangle of auscultation is located
medial to lower part of scapula
boundaries of triangle of auscultation
above: trapezuis
below: latissimus dorsi
laterally: scapula
floor of triangle of auscultation is formed by
- rhomboideus major
2. sixth and seventh ribs and space in between
_______ are heard clearly from triangle of auscultation
breath sounds
lumbar triangle
just above iliac crest and site of hernia
boundaries of lumbar triangle
below: iliac crest
medially: latissimus dorsi
laterally: external oblique muscle
floor of lumbar triangle is formed by
internal abdominal oblique and tranversus abdominis muscles
levator scapulae origin
from transverse processes of upper 4 vertebrae
insertion of levator scapulae
into dorsal surface of scapula above root of spine
nerve supply of levator scapulae
nerve to rhomboids (dorsal scapular nerve) C5
fibres from c3 and c4
action of levator scapulae
- acts with upper fibres of trapezius to elevate shoulder girdle
- rotates scapula so that glenoid cavity look downwards
- retracts scapula
rhomboideus minor origin
ligamentum nuchae, spines of 7th cervical and 1st thoracic vertebrae
rhomboideus minor insertion
into dorsal surface of scapula, opposite root of spine
nerve supply of rhomboideus minor
nerve to rhomboids (dorsal scapular nerve, C5)
action of rhomboideus minor
- rotates scapula so glenoid cavity faces downwards
2. retracts scapula and braces shoulder back
rhomboideus major origin
from spines of 2,3,4,5 thoracic vertebrae and their supraspinous ligaments
rhomboideus major insertion
into dorsal surface of scapula from root of spine to inferior angle
nerve supply of rhomboideus major
nerve to rhomboids (dorsal scapular nerve C5)
action of rhomboideus major
- rotates scapula so glenoid cavity faces downwards
2. retracts scapula and braces shoulder back
