Muscles of the Back Flashcards
Muscles of superficial layer
trapezuis and latissimus dorsi
muscles of deep layer
levator scapulae
rhomboideus major
rhomboideus minor
trapezius covers the
upper half of the back from both sides
origin of trapezius
- back of skull : from protuberance and superior nuchal line
- back of neck : from ligamentum nuchae and spine of 7th cervical vertebra
- back of thorax : from spine of all thoracic vertebrae supraspinous ligaments
insertion of trapezius
V shaped insertion
- upper fibres : inserted to clavicle
- middle fibres : inserted to acromion and upper lip of crest of spine of scapula
- lower fibres : inserted into rough tubercle on crest of spine of scapula (near the root)
insertion of trapezius is surrounded by
V shaped origin of deltoid
nerve supply of trapezius
motor: spinal root of accessory nerve
sensory : cervical nerve number 3 & 4
action of trapezius
- maintains level of shoulder
- upper fibres elevate shoulder girdle
- upper and lower fibers rotate scapula so glenoid cavity looks upward
- middle fibres act with rhomboid to retract scapula and brace the shoulder
paralysis of trapezius leads to
shoulder drop
latissimus dorsi
flat muscle that covers lower half of back down to iliac crest
origin of latissimus dorsi
fleshy fibres from:
- posterior third of outer lip of iliac crest
- spines of lower 6 thoracic vertebrae
- thoraco-lumbar fascia
- outer surface of lower 4 ribs
- few fibres from dorsal aspect of scapula
TRIVS
insertion of latissimus dorsi
into floor of bicipital groove
nerve supply of latissimus dorsi
thoraco-dorsal nerve
action of latissimus dorsi
- extension, medial rotation, and adduction of arm
- act with sternocostal part of pectoralis major, pulls trunk upward
- attaches to ribs and helps in violent expiration like coughing
upper border of latissimus dorsi crosses over
inferior angle of scapula and has triple relation to teres major
it lies behind it then curves below it then goes in front of it.
