Brachial Plexus Flashcards
The brachial plexus is a collection of
nerves and consists of roots, trunks, divisions, and cords
Roots are formed from
Primary rami of the 5,6,7,8 cervical and 1st thoracic nerves
Upper trunk is formed from
Middle trunk is formed from
Lower trunk is formed from
5&6th cervical roots
7th cervical root
8th cervical & 1st thoracic root
The 3 trunks lie
above the clavicle in the neck
Divisions
Each trunk divides behind the clavicle into anterior and posterior divisions
Cords
Medial Cord- formed by anterior division of lower trunk
Lateral Cord- formed by anterior division of middle & upper trunks
Posterior Cord- formed by fusion of posterior divisions of 3 trunks
All branches of the lateral and medial cords supply the
flexor side
All branches of the posterior cord supply the
extensor side
Roots and trunk lie
in the neck
Divisions lie
in apex of axilla behind clavicle
Cords and its branches lie
in the axilla
Nerve to rhomboids is also called
dorsal scapular nerve
nerve to rhomboids arises from
root of C5
nerve to rhomboids supplies the
scapula
levator scapulae
rhomboid muscle
nerve to serratus anterior is also called
long thoracic nerve
