Prochaska and DiClemente (1982)
What is Precontemplation?
Patient not taking action to change behaviour within next 6 months
(Might not be aware of importance of changing behaviour)
What is Contemplation?
Person is considering to change within next 6 months
They are aware of pros and cons
Costs and benefits may keep people in this stage for a long time (chronic contemplation)
What is Preparation?
Plan to take action in the next month
Has planned and ready to take advice
What is Action?
Person is actively engaging in new behaviour
Vigilance against relapse is important
What is Maintenance?
Person is using strategies to reinforce new behaviour
Working to prevent relapse
What is the Transtheoretical Model?
A model to show how people modify a problem behaviour or acquire a positive behaviour
Focuses on decision making of individuals and helps us understand behaviour change
