A
Twigg and Atkin (1991)
2
Q
Carers as a resource
A
- Most common view
- It is the responsibility of the family to ensure adequate health care is provided for its members
- Little concern for wellbeing of carers who are only doing their duty
3
Q
Carers as Co-Worker
A
- Aims to maintain and increase informal care
- Carers are given some support (domestic help, holidays, education and advice)
- Relatives become semi professionals
4
Q
Carer as Co-Client
A
- Carer becomes indirect client and is thus a legitimate focus for support and services
- Client finds it easier to get support from services like the social care network and not the NHS.
- All members of family are treated as clients
5
Q
Superseded Carers
A
- Looks at the future of the dependent person
- Tries to make them independent and less reliant on support
- Most appropriate for those that are dependent on their parents
6
Q
Objective Burden of Carers
A
- Comprises the things that are externally observable and objectively quantifiable:
- Financial Problems
- Disruption to Household: loss of freedom and privacy, carer loses outside contact as constantly involved in caring
- Effects on carer: physical injury, social isolation, little support, psychiatric illness
7
Q
Subjective Burden of Carers
A
- Difficult to measure objectively and to some extent it is how a carer feels about caring
- Carers main complaint is lack of support available
- Emotional impact may cause them to become anxious or depressed
- Person may resent their role and therefore the patient
- Loss of quality of life for carer
Informal care is regulated by social, cultural and context specific system of rights, duties and obligations - “moral minefield”
