Transport of Substances B2 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the net movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a partially permeable membrane.
Describe a partially permeable membrane.
A partially permeable membrane is a membrane with very small holes in it so that only tiny molecules like water can pass through it but larger molecules can’t.
What is water potential?
Water potential is the likelihood of water molecules to diffuse in or out of a solution (e.g. a solution with a high water potential is a high concentrated solution of water)
