Microscopes B1 Flashcards
How do you calculate the total magnification of an image?
Magnification of eyepiece lens x Magnification of objective lens
What are stains used for?
Stains are used to colour whole cells and structures in order to make them easier to see
How many micrometers is 1 meter?
1 meter = 1,000,000 micrometers (µm)
What is an eyepiece lens?
An eyepiece lens is where you place your eye to look through, it also magnifies the image.
What is an objective lens?
The objective lens magnifies the image. There are usually 3 different objectives lenses (e.g. x4, x10 and x40)
What does a stage do in a light microscope?
A stage supports the slide.
What does a clip do in a light microscope?
A clip holds the slide in place.
What does a handle do in a light microscope?
A handle is used to carry the microscope.
What does a lamp do in a light microscope?
The lamp shines light through the slide so the image can be seen more easily.
What do focusing knobs do in a light microscope?
Focusing knobs move stage up or down to bring the image into focus.
State 3 differences between a light and an electron microscope.
An electron microscope requires high voltage of electricity, its uses beams of electrons and the image produced is in black and white. A light microscope has a coloured image, they don’t require high voltages of electricity and use light
