Biodiversity B6 Flashcards
What are some negative impacts humans have on ecosystems?
Deforestation, often done to increase farmland but destroys habitats of organisms. Pollution, resulting from waste produced kills plants and animals. Hunting, reduces number of animals (e.g. species of rhino have become endangered), this may result in extinction.
What are some positive impacts humans have on ecosystems?
Restricting human access, allows plants to not be trampled on. Breeding programmes, which protects endangered species from extinction. Seed banks, seeds are stored to use in the future. Ecotourism, which is a sustainable version of tourism.
What is ecotourism?
Ecotourism aims to reduce the impact of tourism on environment ms by not interfering with wildlife, leaving a low carbon footprint and supporting the local community. It is an example of sustainable development.
Why is biodiversity important?
Biodiversity boosts the economy, e.g. a greater variety of plants means a greater variety of crops.
What are some factors that maintain biodiversity?
Ecotourism, focuses on conservation of a local ecosystem. Seed banks, storing seeds to use in the future. Restricting human access, to make sure nothing is trampled on. Breeding programmes which focus on conserving endangered species.
What can make maintaining biodiversity challenging?
Biodiversity can be challenging because of political issues, e.g. there may be difficulties in gaining agreements between local, national and global partners. It can also be challenging due to economic issues as it can be very expensive, especially.g. trying to monitor conservation schemes.
