Q

Water transport

A
  • water and minerals are transported up xylem vessels, from roots to stem and leaves
  • At leaves, most of water will evaporate and diffuse out of stomata (small pores)
  • loss of water from leaves is called transpiration —> helps draw water up xylem vessels from roots

Q

Factors that affect the rate of transpiration

A
  • increase in temp will increase rate as more energy is transferred to water to allow it to evaporate
  • faster air flow will increase rate as it will blow away water vapour allowing more to evaporate
  • increased light intensity increases rate, as stomata will open
  • increase in humidity will decrease rate as air contains more water vapour, so conc gradient for diffusion is lower

Q

Why does the stomata close at night

A

Because CO2 is not needed for photosynthesis so closing the stomata reduced water loss

Q

When water is plentiful, guard cells _______

A

Take up water and bend
-causes stomata to open so gases for photosynthesis are free to love in and out of stomata along with water from transpiration

Q

The rate of transpiration from a cut shoot an be estimated by ______

Where is the stomata mainly found

A

Bottom surface of leaf, sin won’t shine directly on it, reducing water loss
