Investigating Cells REQ.PRAC Flashcards
Units of measure
CENTImetre - 1 x 10^2
MILLImetre - 1 x 10^3
MICROmetre - 1 x 10^6
NANOmetre - 1 x 10^9
What is resolution ?
Ability to see two or more objects as separate
When was the light microscope developed and what did it allow scientists to see ?
-in 16th century, allowed scientists to see plant, animal and bacterial cells
When was the electron microscope first used ?
1933, showed the passage of electrons rather than light, mitochondria and chloroplasts can be studied as well as ribosomes
Equation of calculating magnification
Size of image
———————-
Size of real object
What is magnification
How many times larger the image is than the real object
REQ PRAC
1) place a tissue sample on a microscope slide
2) add a few drops of a suitable stain
3) lower a coverslip
4) place slide on microscopic slide and and focus on cells using low power
5) change to high power and refocus
6) draw any types of cells that can be seen and add a scale line to diagram (FOCUS ON MILLIMETRES)
