Q

Properties of enzymes

A
  • all are large proteins
  • space within protein molecule called ACTIVE SITE
  • each enzyme catalyses a specific reaction
  • work best at a specific temp and pH called OPTIMUM

Q

Lock and key theory

A
  • used to explain how enzymes work, CHEMICAL that fits is called SUBSTRATE and it fits into ENZYMES ACTIVE SITE, LOCK
  • high temp and extremes of pH make enzymes change shape, DENATURING
  • cannot work anymore because substrate cannot fit into the active site

Q

Enzymes in digestion

A

1) enzymes pass out of cells into digestive system
2) they come into contact with food molecules
3) catalyse the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into smaller solvable molecules

Q

What are the digestive enzymes ?

A

-protease (digest proteins)
-lipase (digest lipids, {fats})
-carbohydrase (carbohydrates)
— DIGEST THESE TO PRODUCE SMALLER MOLECULES THAT CAN BE EASILT ABSORBED INTO BLOODSTREAM
