Non-communicable Diseases Flashcards
What is a non communicable disease
-cannot be spread between organisms but communicable can
E.g. diabetes, HYPOTHYROIDISM
How can different diseases interact with each other
- viruses infecting cells can be the trigger for cancers such as cervical cancer
- diseases of the immune system mean a person is more likely to catch infectious diseases, so people with HIV are more likely to get tuberculosis
- immune reactions triggered by a pathogen
- poor health can lead to diseases
Risk factors can be:

How can heart valves affect someone if faulty
- develops leak or prevents valve opening fully
- can be replaced with biological or mechanical valves
For cases of a heart failure:
- a donor heart can be transplanted
- artificial hearts to keep patient alive
Risk factors for cancer
- smoking, obesity, common viruses and UV exposure
- genetic risk factors
What is cancer caused by
-uncontrolled cell division, can form masses of cells called TUMOURS
What are the two types of rumours
- BENIGN- do not spread around body
- MALIGNANT-spread in blood to different parts of body where they form secondary tumours
