Transport In Plants Flashcards
What are root hair cells?
They are cells on the surface of a plants root that grows into a hair .
There are millions of them
What is the effect of having millions of microscopic hairs?
It gives the plant a larger surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil
Where are Phloem tubes made?
They’re made in columns of elongated living tubes with small pores in the end walls ( allow things to flow through)
What do Phloem tubes do?
They transport food substances made in the leaves to the rest of the plant for immediate use or for storage
What is translocation?
It’s the process of phloem tubes transporting food substances made into the leaves to the rest of the plant it is called translocation because it requires energy from respiration
What are xylem tubes?
They are made of dead cells joined to the end with no end walls between them and a hole down the middle
What are the xylem strengthened by?
A material called living
What do they carry and how?
They carry water and mineral ions from the roots through the stem and leaves, this movement is called transpiration.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is caused by evaporation and diffusion the loss of water creates a slight shortage of water in the leaf.
So more water is drawn up from the rest of the plant through the xylem vessels to
What is transpiration?
It is the loss of water from the plant it is caused by evaporation and diffusion of a plants surface
What does more water mean in transpiration?
It means more water is drawn up from the roots and so there is constant transpiration stream of water through the plant.
The transpiration stream carries mineral ions that are dissolved in the water along with it.
