Transport in plants Flashcards
Why do multicellular organisms need transport systems?
They are too large for diffusion to be effective
What do xylem transport?
Water and minerals
How do xylem work?
They carry water and mineral salts from the roots up to the shoot to the leaves in the transpiration stream.
What do phloem transport?
Sugars and amino acids (food)
How do phloem work?
They carry sugars and amino acids from where they are made in the leaves to other parts of the plant.
What is translocation?
The movement of food substances around the plant.
How do root hair cells take in water?
1) The cells on plant roots grow into long hairs which stick out into the soil.
2) Each branch of a root will be covered in millions of these microscopic hairs.
3) This gives the plant a large surface area for absorbing water from the soil.
