The nervous system and responding to stimuli Flashcards
Function of receptors
Detect external stimuli
Functions of effectors
Bring about responses to stimuli
How do receptors communicate?
With effectors via the nervous system and the hormonal system.
What is the central nervous system made up of?
Neurons
3 main types of neuron
Sensory neurons, motor neurons, and relay neurons
What does the central nervous system consist of?
Brain and spinal cord only
How do receptors work?
1) When they sense a stimulus, they send electrical impulses along the sensory neurons to the CNS.
2) The CNS then sends electrical impulses to an effector along the motor neuron.
3) The effector responds accordingly
What is the job of the CNS?
Coordinating a response
Why is the nervous system able to produce rapid responses?
The neurons transmit information using high-speed electrical impulses.
What are synapses and what do they do?
1) Synapses are the connections between 2 neurons.
2) The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals called neurotransmitters which move across the gap.
3) These chemicals can then set off a new electrical signal into the next neurons.
