Minerals for healthy growth Flashcards
Nitrates
1) Contain nitrogen for making amino acids and proteins.
2) These are needed for cell growth.
3) If a plant doesn’t get enough nitrates its growth will be stunted and older leaves will turn yellow.
Phosphates
1) Contain phosphorous for making DNA and cell membranes.
2) They are needed for respiration and growth.
3) If a plant doesn’t get enough phosphates, it will have poor root growth and its older leaves become purple.
Potassium
1) Helps the enzymes needed for photosynthesis and respiration.
2) If plants don’t get enough potassium, they will have poor flower and fruit growth and discolored leaves.
Magnesium
1) Needed to make chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
2) If plants don’t get enough magnesium they will have yellow leaves.
