Functions of the blood Flashcards
Four components of blood
Plasma, platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells
Plasma
Blood minus the blood cells. A pale yellow liquid.
What does it carry around the body?
1) Red and white blood cells (platelets)
2) Digested food products
3) Carbon dioxide
4) Urea
5) Hormones
6) Heat
What are platelets
Small fragments that help blood clot
How do platelets work?
1) When a blood cell is damaged, platelets clump together in this area
2) This is know as a blood clot
3) Blood clots stop you losing too much blood and prevent microorganisms from entering the wound
4) In a clot, the platelets are held together by a protein called fibrin
Red blood cells carry oxygen
1) They are small and have a biconcave shape, giving them a large surface area for absorbing and releasing oxygen
2) They contain haemoglobin which contains a lot of iron
3) They don’t have a nucleus-this frees space for haemoglobin to carry oxygen
