The Alimentary Canal Flashcards
Mouth
1) Contain salivary glands
2) Produce amylase enzyme
3) Break down food
Oesophagus
The muscular tube that connects the mouth and the stomach
Liver
Where bile is produced
Gall Bladder
Where bile is stored
Large intestine
1) Also called the colon
2) Where excess water from food is absorbed
Rectum
1) The last part of the large intestine
2) Where faeces are stored before they are expelled out of the anus
Stomach
1) Pummels food with its muscular walls
2) Produces the protease enzyme, pepsin
3) Produces hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and give optimum pH levels for enzymes to work
Pancreas
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes and releases them into the small intestine
Small intestine
1) Produces protease, amylase, and lipase for complex digestion
2) Where nutrients are absorbed
2 parts of the small intestine
The first part is the duodenum and the last part is the ileum
Villi adaptations for absorption
1) They have a large surface area to maximize the rate of glucose absorption
2) The have many small microvilli which further increase total surface area
3) They have a rich supply of capillaries
4) Have single permeable layer of surface cells which allow glucose to pass through them
5) The small intestine is very long, so there is lots of time to break down and absorb all the food before it reaches the end
