Transactional model of stress and coping
A
- Stress involves a exchange (transaction) between an individual and the environment.
- Stress response depends on appraisal (interpretation) of the stressor and the ability or resources to cope with it.

Two types of appraisal:

Primary and Secondary

Primary;
A
decide whether situation is stressful, irrelevant or benign/positive, if stressful, then additional appraisals.
- harm/loss, i.e. assess known damage
- threat, i.e. assess harm/loss that has not yet occurred.
- challenge, i.e. assess personal growth or gain potential

Secondary
A
judgement on coping options and resources, e.g. internal and external resources.
-May also engage in reappraisal to judge whether additional resources are needed to cope, taking into account resources that are available.
