Allostasis Flashcards
1
Q
Allostasis
A
- maintenance of stability through change.
- bodily systems respond flexibly to internal and external demands.
- achieved through brain’s regulation of allostatic systems, e.g. HPA axis, autonomic, immune and cardiovascular systems.
- provides a model that integrates biological, psychological and social factors to explain an individual’s response to stress.
When brain perceives stressor, allostatic response is ‘turned on’, then ‘turned off’ when stressor passes.
2

Allostatic overload
A
may occur when allostatic response is ‘turned on’ for a long time or continually turns on and off, cumulative exposure to stress hormones leads to wear and tear on brain and body.
