CONDITIONING Flashcards
Conditioning
A type of learning that focuses on the association that is made by the learner between a stimulus and a response.
Stimulus
Any variable present in the environment that may trigger a response.
Response
an action or a behaviour that is exhibited.
Classical conditioning
- A form of learning in which a new neutral stimulus is paired with a stimulus that produces a reflexive involuntary response until the neutral stimulus alone produces that response.
Neutral Stimulus (NS)
Any stimulus that produces no relevant response prior to the classical conditioning process.
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
Any stimulus that consistently leads to a reflexive response without any learning having taken place. The UCS elicits the unconditioned response. (UCR).
Unconditioned response (UCR)
An unlearned reflexive and involuntary response to a stimulus. The UCR is elicited by the unconditioned stimulus (UCS).
Conditioned Response - (CR)
-A reflexive and involuntary response that has become associated with the stimulus by which it was not previously caused during classical conditioning. The CR is elicited by the conditioned stimulus (CS).
Conditioned Stimulus - (CS)
A previously neutral stimulus that has become associated with the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) during classical conditioning so that it now produces a reflexive response for which it was not previously responsible. The CS elicits the conditioned response CR.
