What is training?
The acquisition of knowledge and skills that can be applied to a particular job.
Advantages of training
New employees will be properly inducted into the business.
A highly trained workforce is more efficient and effective.
Improves customer satisfaction with the products/services.
Decreases the supervision required for employees.
Disadvantages of training
Programmes are expensive for the business.
Employees are to be given time off work to undertake training.
Highly trained employees may demand higher pay levels.
Definition of induction training
Is introducing new employees to the organisation and making sure that they know about the organisation and its objectives, rules and regulations and shown the skills which they must learn.
Reasons for induction
Intended to help the new employee adjust to the new work environment.
Designed to get the employee as productive as possible as soon as possible.
Helps new recruits get off to a good start within the business.
Methods of on-the-job training
Internal courses - employer might run courses inside their own business.
Work shadowing - involves the employee observing an experienced employee doing their job.
Role plays - involves creating certain situations that could occur and allows employee to think how they would tackle the situation.
Advantages of on-the-job training
Build morale through relationships.
Cheaper than off-the-job training.
No loss of output.
Disadvantages of on-the-job training
A trainer’s work may not be of high standard.
The work situation might be too noisy and stressful and not helpful for effective learning.
Experienced employee may neglect their own job whilst carrying out the training.
Methods of off-the-job training
Lectures - giving advice or information about certain tasks.
Demonstrations - trainee watches the expert but then they must be given the opportunity to practise.
Role play - undertaken to imitate real life situations that the employee may face during their working lives.
Advantages of off-the-job training
Employees should be properly trained as the course is run by a professional.
The trainee can learn at his/her own pace.
It will motivate an employee.
Disadvantages of off-the-job training
More expensive than on-the-job.
Loss of productivity.
Equipment used may differ from that back in the workplace.
