What is staff appraisal?
Is analysing and assessing the performance of the employee’s performance in their job. The aim of it is to see if they are performing above or below what you would like
Reasons for appraisal
Determine the current level at which someone is performing.
To find out an employee’s strengths and weaknesses.
To identify training and development needs.
Look at current performance in order to reward people fairly and to identify people who have potential for promotion or transfer.
Advantages of self-evaluation?
May provoke a more honest response than questions asked to them.
Encourages self-reflection.
Makes the employee responsible for their own work.
Disadvantages of self-evaluation
Employee may not be aware of their own faults.
Employee may not know how to improve upon any weaknesses.
Advantages of observation
Allows employees to be observed in their usual surroundings.
It gives a true picture of employees’ work.
Disadvantages of observation
Some employees find it off putting to be observed.
Time consuming.
Advantages of an interview
Gives both parties a private opportunity to discuss the employee’s work and progress.
Allows the employee to put forward his/her own ideas.
Diagnoses problems in work and tires to find solutions.
Disadvantages of an interview
Employees may not be open and honest
Advantages of appraisal for the employee
Gives them opportunities for promotion and sets pay levels.
Makes sure that they receive training if necessary.
Allows them to achieve their full potential.
Disadvantages of appraisal for the employee
Employee may view it as an opportunity for the employer to check up on them and therefore view it in a negative way.
Employee may be very nervous and apprehensive and may not perform to their full potential.
Advantages of appraisal for the employer
Helps in the planning and development of the businesses human resource provision.
Increases staff competence and overall productivity.
Shows up staff strength and allows the business to use the best employees efficiently.
Disadvantages of appraisal for the employer
Time spent on appraisal leading to a fall in productivity.
Can be stressful for employer/appraiser.
May not be taken seriously by employees.
