the process of teaching dtaff how to do their job more efficiently and effectively by bossting their knowledge and skills
what are the benefits of training for employees?
- opportunity for promotion and self-improvement
- improved job satisfaction through better job performance
- challenge: chance to learn new things
- adaptability: greater ability to adapt and cope with changes

- higher productivity through better job performance and more efficient use of human resources
- goals and objectives are effectively met
- reduced costs due to less labour turnover and absenteeism, fewer errors and accidents
- more capable, ‘mobile’ workforce
what is the link between short/long term motivation and training?
short term: improved job satisfaction, challenge
long term: promotion and self improvement, adaptability
what are the two training options?
- on-the-job training
- off-the-job training
what is the on the job training?
- occurs in the working environment, employees learn a specific set of skills to perform particular tasks within the workplace.
e.g. learning how to use the equipment, machinery and documents in the workplace
who leads the on the job training?
training may be provided by an experienced team member, leader, manager etc.
external providers may be brought into the workplace to provide training
e.g. when new equipment or software is installed
what are advantages of on the job training?
- cost effective, no travel expense
- productivity is maintained as employees are working while training
- trainess use the actual equipment that is required to do the job while immediate feedback is also delivered
what are the disadvantages of on the job training?
- quality of the training may vary
- bad habits from older staff may be passed down
- trainer may have to leave their own duties to train.
what is off the job training?
- occurs offsite. it involves sending employees to a particular specialised training institution (e.g. University, TAFE)
who leads off the job training?
may be a specialist provider, with knowledge relevant to an industry, type of equipment or product.
e.g. the institute of chartered accountants offers special courses in a range of financial issues for employees in the finance industry
what are the advantages of off the job training?
- wider range of skills and qualifications than those in the workplace
- experts and specialists can provide broader experience
- more structures and organised, clear assessment process
what are the disadvantages of off the job training?
- more expensive, fees, travel costs etc
- lost working time when employees are absent
- employees with externally recognised qualification may be more tempted to leave to find a better job
what are strategies for training to develop employees?
development:
- the process of preparing employees to take on more responsibilities in the future, acquiring better knowledge and skills, and gaining more experience
what are programs to develop managers?
- job rotation
- mentoring
- formal business training
