technological development Flashcards
what is efficiency in technological development?
it is how well a business is using their resources to achieve their objectives
e.g. a digger is more efficient compared to someone with a shovel
what is economies of scale? (it is linked to efficiency)
it means to increase the quantity of outputs to lower the cost per unit of output.
example:
cooking for 1 person - 20min
cooking for a family - 1hr
cooking for extended family-2hr
what is effectiveness in techonological development? and how can this be done?
it is the degree to which a business accomplishes it’s objectives, this means meeting customer’s expectations to then achieve higher customer satisfaction.
- high quality outputs
- better features
- fewer defects
- faster deliveries
what is competitivness in technological development?
by increasing effectiveness/efficiency a business’ competitivness increases, competitivness means providing outputs at lower cost or higher quality than rivals
what is the 6 strategies of technological development?
- automated production lines
- robotics
- computer-aided design
- computer-aided manufacturing techniques
- artificial intelligence
- online services
what is automated production lines?
when machinery and equipment are arranged in a sequence with components added to a good as it proceeds through each stem, the processes are controlled by computers
how does automated production lines improve efficiency and effectiveness?
efficiency:
- fewer humanr esources
- perform tasks quicker than humans
- reducing waste due to accuracy
effectiveness:
- improved safety
- improved quality
advantages and disadvantages of automated production lines?
adv:
- business able to produce at faster rate
- reduced need for labour
disadv:
- costly, costly to maintain/replace
- employee training required
what are robotics?
- it is highly specialised form of technology capable of complex tasks
it is used to perform repetitive tasks.
how does robotics improve efficiency and effectiveness?
efficiency:
- fewer human resource
- performs tasks quicker than humans
- reduced waste due to accuracy
effectiveness:
- improved safety
- improved quality
what is computer aided desing (CAD)?
- a computarised design tool that allows a business to create product possibilities from a series of input parameters
advantages and disadvantages of robotics?
adv:
- business able to produce at faster rate
- reduced need for labour
disadv:
- costly, costly to maintain/replace
- employee training required
how does CAD improve efficiency and effectiveness?
efficiency:
- fewer resources
- ability to view the product, opportunity for feedback
effectiveness:
- making adjustments prior to production (meet consumer needs)
- 3d viewing of product provides more realistic perspective
what are advantages and disadvantages of CAD?
adv:
- design can be viewed from multiple angles
- product desogns can be produced at a faster rate
disadv:
- computer software crash
- cost of the software
what is computer aided manufacture (CAM)?
- the use of sotfware to direct and control manufacturing processes
- real world application: 3d printing
