Trade and the economy Flashcards
How was trade affected by the War of the Roses?
One aspect of English society that definitely felt the impact of the Wars of the Roses was trade.
By the end of the 15th century, English merchants were not faring as well as their Hanseatic neighbours and in particular were pushed out of important trading areas, especially the Baltic region.
English trade was highly restricted because of the political situation at home and tensions with foreign powers
Why was trade affected so badly?
this failure was because of the political instability and the failure of the English government to support the country’s merchants.
How England’s relations with the Low Countries + the Hanseatic merchants?
trade with the Low Countries was affected by the English Crown’s relations with the Duchy of Burgundy and had a knock-on effect on relations with the Hanseatic merchants.
This forced English merchants to look elsewhere for trade
The English government could also do nothing to prevent the irresponsible piracy attacks on Hanseatic ships by the Earl of Warwick in the English Channel
