What started the Yorkshire Uprising?
Victory at the Battle of Stoke didn’t put an end to Pro Yorkist sentiment which was compounded by General discontent
H7 wanted war with France in 1489 and raised tax to support this war
Why did people rebel?
resentment to this taxation lead to riots in Yorkshire
after having 2 bad harvests the only good harvest in 1489 had to be taxed angering the ppl
these people feel burdened enough from defending the border against Scotland
they were also worried about the Auld alliance between Scotland and France which meant these two foreign powers could potentially invade England
What happened to Northumberland?
Northumberland reported to Henry that northerns wouldn’t pay their tax
Henry said to use Force against the non-payers
The rebels retaliated by Killing Northumberland in April 1489
What did Northumberland’s murder show?
Northumberland murder happened because his retinue failed to protect him
this may be because Northumberland’s retinue was previously recruited by R3 so their loyalty to Northumberland was lukewarm
