The proclamation of a new Tudor dynasty under Henry VII Flashcards
When did Henry Tudor date his reign and why?
Henry Tudor established his reign the day before the Battle of Bosworth on the 21st of August 1485
this meant that he could accuse the Yorkists of treason but he pardoned them to win their loyalty so they can’t go against him or they’ll be executed
this is significant as Henry needed the experience of the Yorkists Lords since the Lancastrian Nobles weren’t in power for the last 24 years so had little experience
When was the general pardon issued?
on the 11th of October 1485
Who did Henry capture after the Battle of Bosworth?
Henry captured Edward Earl of Warwick The Heir to the Plantagenet line as a precaution against an uprising
he also captured Northumberland
When was Henry’s coronation?
on the 30th of October 1485
he did this first show he had God’s approval before he met with Parliament
When did Henry meet with Parliament?
Henry met with Parliament on the 7th of November 1485
he did not ask for the ratification of his title, but rather presented his right and title as a fait accompli
Why is it significant that H7 had his coronation before he met with Parliment?
This was significant as it meant Parliament couldn’t go against him as he was now recognised as the rightful king
it also implied his power stemmed from his own power and position, not that of Parliament
When did Henry marry Elizabeth of York?
on the 18th of January 1486
this united Yorkists + Lancastrians
Henry chose to do this last as he didn’t want anyone to accuse him of becoming King because of his wife as Elizabeth of York had a stronger claim to the throne
