- Induce emesis
- Gastric Lavage
- Activated Charcoal
- Cathartics
Gastric Irritation Emetics
Ipecac Syrup and H2O2
CNS Stimulation (vomit trigger zone) Emetics
Apomorphine, Xylazine, and Cephazolin
Ipecac Syrup
Over the Counter,
Vomit in 30 min
H2O2
Over the Counter,
Dose- 1 tsp/10#, do not exceed 3 tbsp
Vomit in 20-30 min, can safely redose one time.
Apomorphine
Dogs only
Dose- 0.03mg/kg IV
Xylazine
Cats only
0.44mg/kg IM
Cephazolin
Quick IV bolus
Reliable in Cats
When is emesis contraindicated
Seizure, Dyspnea, Hypoxia, Caustic Substances, and lack of pharyngeal reflex.
Ocular exposure
Rinse eyes with physiological saline solution
+/- Steroids- don’t use if ulcer is present
Topical exposure
Bathe with mild detergent and protect your self form exposure
** consider ingestion also
Gastric Lavage
Most reliable 2-4 hrs after ingestion
Activated Charcoal
- Binds to the toxin and inhibits GI absorption
- Given TID- QID for 2-3 days
Activated Charcoal Brand Names
Toxiban/Vet a Mix
Powder or Tablet
Cathartics
- Agents that promote the clearing of intestine
- Give 30 min after charcoal
Cathartic contraindications
Diarrhea, neonates, and geriatrics
Bulk Cathartics
Increase fecal vol.
Psyllium, Metamucil
Lubricant Cathartics
Soften feces and reduce friction
Mineral Oil
Osmotic Cathartics
Increase H2O content in intestine
Milk of Magnesia or Epsom Salt
