Cardiology Part 3: Heart diseases Flashcards
Heart disease
abnormality in the heart that can lead to heart failure
Signs of heart disease
Tachycardia Tachepnia Lethargic Exercise intolerance Cardiac cough= dry and unproductive
Heart failure
unable to maintain cardiac output
Signs of heart failure
fatigue lethargic cyanosis cachexia= weightloss and muscle wasting orthopnea= inability to breathe unless upright
3 ways heart will compensate
- Increase the heart rate (2-3x normal)
- Become hypertrophied
- Chambers will dilate
Diagnostic Tests for heart disease
Auscultation Echo Blood pressure Arterial blood gas analysis Pulse oximetry Radiographs ECG
Atrial Septal Defect
congenital heart disease
defect in the interatrial septum
soft systolic murmur
Ventricle Septal Defect
congenital heart disease
causes diastolic murmur
Aortic & Polmonic Stenosis
congenital heart disease
AV insufficiency
Acquired heart disease
as the patient ages, the AV valve shrinks
Heartworm
Acquired heart disease
primarily right ventricle & pulmonary artery
Vegetative endocarditis
Acquired heart disease bacterial infection causes systemic bactermia drawn to AV valve and settles, then scars and leads to septic embolism Poor dental health= major cause
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Acquired heart disease
taurine deficiency in maine coons
Dilated cardiomyopathy
Acquired heart disease
thin myocardium, with large dilated chambers
Pericarditis
Acquired heart disease inflammation of pericardium due to general infection muffled heart sounds weak and thready pulse very painful dyspnic
