Toxicology Flashcards
Hypothermia
Bradycardia
Decreased Q
Arrythmias, Osborn (J) Waves on EKG
“Core Temperature After Drop”
Hyperthermia
Mild - heat cramps
Moderate - heat exhaustion, loss of volume/electrolytes
Severe - heat stroke, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, hot DRY skin, worsening CNS s/s.
Malignant Hyperthermia
Caused by continuous release of calcium into muscle fibers causing sustained contractions.
Antidote: Dantrolene. No CCB’s with dantrolene.
Drowning
- initial laryngospasm
- inability to breath
- drop in Pa02 releases spasm
- panic and hyperventilation
- worsening hypoxemia
Airway management. PEEP.
Snake Bites
Treatment:
Immobilize
Airway, ventilation, and circulatory support
Monitor for systemic reactions
Antivenin
How much time since bite?
Mark and track area around bite.
Hydroflouric Acid
H+ ions cause initial superficial burn injuries
Flouride continues to penetrate over time causing tissue necrosis
May render Ca+ and Mg+ neutralized.
Hyperkalemia, Hypocalcemia, Hypomagnesemia.
Caustic Ingestions
Airway control
NO antiemetics
NO gastric lavage
NGT suction
Supportive Care
