Mechanical Ventilation Flashcards
Minute Ventilation
RR x Tidal Volume
4-8 L/min for adults
Pediatrics 4-8 L/min
Infants 0.2-0.3 L/min/kg
Frequency
Sum of respiratory rate and any patient triggered breaths
**NOT ONLY RESPIRATORY RATE
Tidal Volume
Amount of volume delivered by ventilator
Vte
Exhaled Vital Volume
Accurate measurement of the volume of air recieved by the patient. Accounts for deadspace.
PIP
Peak Inspiratory Pressure
Measurement of pressure at upper airway. ETT, vent circuit, bronchial tree. Maintain at <35 PIP.
DOPE
Displacement
Obstruction
Pneumothorax
Equipment Failure
PEEP (Negative)
Negative - Increased intrathoracic pressure, potentially reducing venous return and affecting cardiac output.
Assist Control mode
Guarantees minute ventilation
Does not allow for patient respiratory drive.
When patient triggers breath, delivers full set tidal volume.
SIMV
Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation
Designed to wean patients off ventilator
Patient is allowed to trigger spontaneous breath between mandatory breath.
Pressure Support
only during SIMV. Reduces patient breathing effort.
Airway Resistance Equation
PIP - Pplat / Flow (lps) >10 is significant
Dynamic Compliance
Airway resistance and Alveolar compliance together. Vt / (PIP - PEEP) Normal is 40-100
Static Compliance
Alveolar Compliance = Vt / (Pplat - PEEP)
