Looks at the psychological and behavioural processes in health, illness, and healthcare
Biopsychosocial Approach
Integrates psychology, sociology, and biology in diagnoses and treatment
Psychosomatic Medicine
Focuses on biologica, physiological and social contributions to health
Psychoneuroimmunology
Studies the interaction of the nervous and immune systems with psychological processes
Stress
External event with negative connotations that threatens one’s well - being, health, or resources
Stressors
Individual events/causes of stress and can range in severity. Can be microstresseers or catastrophic eventns
General Adaptation Syndrom (GAS)
Response to chronic stress in three phases
- Alarm phase
- Resistance phase
- Exhaustion phase
Alarm Phase
Rapid increase in physiological arousal (SNS)
Resistance Phase
Body’s resources are mobilized to deal with the stress. Adrenal glands release epinephrine and cortisol to maintain arousal
Exhaustion Phase
The body’s resources are depleted
Epinephrine
Produced by adrenal medulla. Activates the SNS
Cortisol
Adrenal cortex. Regulates blood glucose levels
Problem - focused coping
Behaviourally - driven coping that aims to find solutions that reduce the source of stress
Emotion - focused coping
Aimed at reducing the emotional response to stress
Self - efficacy
How good someone believes they are at something
Social support
Provides a source of advice and help (safety net)
Type - A Personality
Competitive, scores higher in neuroticism, increased fear of hostility and anger
Happiness
Subjective term we have come to know as well - being
Satisfaction with Life
An individual who reflects on their lie and makes a judgement about how they feel using their own standards
Positive Feelings
Emotions such as love, warmth, affection, goodwill towards other people etc
Low Negative Feelings
Low levels of anger and depression
Benefits of Happiness
Stronger immune systems, longer life span, more stable relationships, more productive in work/school, more engaged in community and helping others
Internal Influences on Happiness
Temperament, personality, optimistic outlook, resilience
