Topic Marker, Subject Marker, Object Marker Flashcards
Topic Marker (은/는)
Marks the current topic of a conversation/sentence - what you talking about.
“As for…”; “When it comes to…”
은 is used when topic ends in a consonant
는 is used when topic ends in a vowel
Imagine that for every conversation, there’s a sign floating above the group. Changing the Topic Marker is changing what’s written on that sign.
Once the topic is set with the Topic Marker, it’s not necessary to repeat it.
Subject Marker (이/가)
Marks the subject of a verb
이 is used when subject ends in a consonant
가 is used when subject ends in a vowel
The subject of an Action Verb is who or what is doing the action
The subject of a Descriptive Verb is who or what is being described
It does NOT change the topic of the conversation.
It is often used together with the Topic Marker, whenever the topic needs to stay the same.
Object Marker (을/를)
Marks the object of an Action Verb - whoever or whatever is receiving that action.
It attaches directly after a noun (a person, place, or thing), and it shows who or what a verb is doing something to.
을 is used when object ends in a consonant
를 is used when object ends in a vowel
