Topic 6 Flashcards
What is operant extinction?
The procedure of withholding reinforcers that maintain a behavior
What is Classical (Respondent) extinction?
- A conditioned stimulus that has been
previously paired with an unconditioned
stimulus and produces a conditioned response - Is no longer followed by the unconditioned
stimulus - And as a result, the conditioned response is
weakened (decreases, or stops occurring)
What is an extinction burst?
increase in frequency, duration, and/or intensity of the unreinforced behavior during the extinction process ex: an individual may initially exhibit a heightened response, like a final desperate attempt to reinstate the previous reinforcement.
What is increase in operant variability?
other behaviors are more likely to occur during extinction
What is an emotional response?
Heightened emotional state during extinction can lead to aggression
What is spontaneous recovery?
the tendency for extinguished behavior to occur again in situations the same as or similar to those where it had been previously reinforced
What is partial reinforcement effect?
Schedules that reinforce more intermittently take longer to extinguish than schedules that reinforce less intermittently
Is extinction nonaversive?
yes, it doesn’t involve punishment procedures
What are the five steps of functional assessment process?
1.Identify and define target behavior that needs to be increased and/or decreased
2. Initiate baseline data collection
3.Complete functional assessment
4. Develop and implement treatment
5. Evaluate
What are the two types of Functional assessment?
Exploratory: test a range of possible functions
Hypothesis Testing: test hypothesis from descriptive assessment
What are the two categories of reinforcement?
Mediated by the actions of others
Not mediated by others
What is a downside to putting one through extinction?
It can only tell an individual what not to do, you also must incorporate reinforcement of alternative behaviors to encourage shift of behavior to more desirable actions
What is generalization?
getting the shift in behavior to apply to multiple situations and environments
What is a issue with operant extinction
Must be able to identify reinforcer for problem behavior, which could be difficult.
