topic 5.1.1: communication and homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis
the maintenance of a constant internal environment via physiological control systems
what is negative feedback
when a deviation from set limits is detected by a receptor, mechanisms are put in place to restore the conditions
what is positive feedback
when a deviation from the set limits triggers a response to increase the deviation further
what is an ectotherm
an organism which uses surroundings to warm its body- core body temp is heavily reliant on surroundings
what are some behavioural responses of ectotherms
conduction from hotter surfaces, moving to shade
what are some physiological responses of ectotherms
dark colours
what are endotherms
regulate body temperature through a nervous response
how are temperature changes detected in endotherms
peripheral temperature receptors in skin detect surface temp changes
hypothalamus detects blood temp changes
how do endotherms respond to temperature changes
vasodilation/constriction
