Topic 5.1: Communication and homeostasis Flashcards
Excretion
1
Q
What is excretion ?
A
- Removal of metabolic waste products that are toxic are allowed to build up.
2
Q
What are the waste products ?
A
- Carbon dioxide
- Urea
- Bile
3
Q
What are the three main functions ?
A
- Storage of glyocgen
- Detoxification
- Formation of urea
4
Q
Explain the storage of glycogen
A
- The liver responds to the hormones insulin and glycogen to control glucose levels in the blood.
- The liver converts glycogen into glucose in a process called glucogenesis.
- The glycogen is stored in the liver until the glucose is needed for energy
5
Q
Explain detoxification
A
- hydrogen peroxide broken down by catalase into oxygen and water, it is an intracellular - works within hepacytes.
- Catalse is a globular protein (circular/insoluble/ has hydrophillic and hydrophobc regions)
- Alcohol-broken by alcohol dehydorgenase into ethanol than ethnoate used for repiration for bulit up fatty acids.
