Gas Exchange In Insects Flashcards
What is the circulatory system in insects?
- They have an open circulatory system
- Heart pumps blood line liquid that provides nutrients and removes waste products.
Where is the main site of gas exchange?
- Tracheae
What does the trachea extend into?
- They extend into tracheae’s and then the insects muscle tissue
What is a spiracle?
A tiny opening at the end as a trachea, they open and close to control the entry exit of gases.
Where are trachea found?
- insects abdomen /thorax
How does the insect draw air into the trachea?
To draw air into the trachea the insects expands its abdomen
What happens after the insect expands its abdomen?
This increases the volume of the thorax which creates a pressure gradient for the air flow into the trachea and all the way into the tracheoles, where gas exchange occurs.
What are the adaptations for efficient gas exchange in insects?
-Short diffusion pathway
- large surface area
- concentration gradient of oxygen and carbon dioxide
- faster diffusion into the muscle tissue
-large surface area to volume
Explain short diffusion pathway
-wall of tracheole ends only one cell thick.
Explain large surface area
- Highly branched large number of tracheoles.
