Topic 5 Part 2: Reactivity of metal Flashcards
What is Reactivivity?
Reactivity refers to the tendency of a chemical react with others
What is a period? (Elements)
A Period is a horizontal row of the periodic table
What is electronegativity?
is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
What is the atomic number of an element?
The atomic number is the number of protons in the atom
How many electrons in an atom?
The same number as protons
What is electron configuration?
the arrangement of electrons in shells around the nucleus
What is Valence Shell
Valence shell is the outer most shell of any atom
Valence electrons
The number of electrons on the outer shell
What are the elements in the last vertical column on the right hand side of the periodic table?
Noble gasses
What do all noble gases have in common?
They all have a full Valence Shell
What are noble gases also known as?
inert gases
What are elements in group 1 of the periodic table known as?
Alkali Metals
Why are Alkali Metals very reactive?
Because they only have one electron on the Valence Shell
What are elements in group 2 of the periodic table known as?
alkaline earth metals
How many electrons are in the outer shell of alkali metals (or group 1) in the Periodic Table?
Alkali metals (or group 1) have one electron in the outer shell.
