Topic 3 Part 1 - What is snow? Flashcards
What does the size of snowflakes depend on?
The size of snowflakes is dependent upon the temperature and amount of water vapour available at the time of development.
What percentage of earth does snowflakes cover?
About 23% of the earths surface
At above which temperatures does ice crystals form around small particles of dust in the air to form snowflakes?
-40 degrees Celsius
How big is the atmostphere?
100 km
What is the equation for volume?
Volume = Length x breadth x height
What is the equation for density?
p = m / V
What is the SI for density?
p is density, km m ^-3
What is the SI for mass?
kg
What is the SI for volume?
m^3
What is the equation for the circumference of a circle?
c=2πr or c=πd
What is troposphere?
The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere
Thermal conduction
Thermal conduction is the transfer of internal energy by microscopic collisions of particles and movement of electrons within a body.
Convection (Heat)?
Convection (or convective heat transfer) is the transfer of heat from one place to another due to the movement of fluid.
endothermic process
a chemical reaction in which heat is absorbed
What is latent heat?
The energy required for evaporation or sublimation is called latent heat
What layer is above the troposphere?
tropopause
What is the temperature like in the tropopause?
The temperature remains roughly constant
Does convection stop in the tropopause?
Yes
What layer is above the tropopause?
stratosphere
How does temperature work in the stratosphere?
Temperature increase with increasing altitude
What causes the increasing of temperature in the stratosphere?
It is mainly due to the radiation from the sun entering the atmosphere above
What is precipitation?
Is the name given to any liquid or solid that falls from a cloud and reaches the floor
At what diameter is water droplets considered to be raining?
0.5mm or larger
How much does the temperature change with altitude?
Atmospheric temperature decreases approximately 6 °C per 1000 m of altitude.
