Topic 5 Part 1: The importance of metals Flashcards
What are the two main ways metals can be shaped?
ductility & malleability
What is ductility?
they can be deformed under tensile stress, e.g. by stretching
What is malleability?
they can be deformed under compressive stress, e.g. by hammering into thin sheets
What metal is not solid at room tempreture?
Metal
How many karats is full gold?
24 karats
How much gold (in % by mass of gold) is in 9-karat gold jewellery?
37.5% by mass of gold.
What is the three-dimensional structure regular ordered pattern
lattice structure
delocalised electrons meaning
In bulk metals, these electrons, rather than being associated with any particular metal atom, can be thought to be part of a shared ‘sea’ of electrons that move freely
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction between the delocalised electrons and the positively charged nuclei
Why does metals have a high melting point?
because metallic bonding is strong and occurs in all directions
What could voltage be considered in terms of electrons
Voltage could be considered the push
What could current be considered in terms of electrons
The flow
