Topic 5: Nervous Tissue Flashcards
what is the function of a neuron
- nerve cell
- specialised for signal conduction & information processing
What is the function of neuroglia cells?
- support, nourish & protect neurons
- critical for maintaining homeostasis of interstitial fluid around neurons
Structure of a typical motor neuron includes what 4 things?
- Cell body
- Dendrites
- Axon
- Axon terminals
What is the cell body?
Nucleus, cytoplasm with typical organelles
What are Dendrites?
- Highly branched structures emerging from cell body
– receive input
What are axons?
- Conducts impulse away from cell body toward another neuron or effector
- Emerges at cone-shaped axon hillock
What are axon terminals?
At the end of axon with synaptic bulbs
What is myelination?
Axons covered with a myelin sheath
What is a myelin sheath and what is its function?
Many layered lipid & protein creating insulations
Increases speed of nerve conduction.
What is the term used to describe gaps in the myelin?
Nodes of Ranvier
What are nodes important for?
Nodes are important for signal conduction
Give an example of a disease that destroys myelin
Multiple Sclerosis
What is white matter
primarily myelinated axons
What is grey matter
cell bodies, dendrites, unmyelinated axons, axon terminals & neuroglia
What is the brain cortex
- Outer layer
- made up of grey matter and white matter located internally
