Topic 2 cells: The cell cycle Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 phases of the cell cycle
A
- Interphase
- Mitotic phase
- Cytokenesis
2
Q
What is involved in the interphase of the cell cycle?
A
- Growth and development of cell
- Prepares for reproduction-DNA synthesis,etc.
3
Q
What is involved in the mitotic phase of the cell cycle?
A
Division of nucleus and cell
(4 phases within this)
4
Q
What is involved in cytokinesis?
A
Division of cell
5
Q
Explain the steps of the prophase (also called the prometaphase)
A
- Centrioles move to opposite ends
- Nuclear envelope disappears
- Chromosomes appear with centromeres
- Chromosomes move to spindles
6
Q
Key points in the metaphase:
A
- Chromosomes line up in the centre =>
- Metaphase plate
7
Q
Explain what happens in the anaphase
A
Sister chromosomes move to opposite ends of spindle
8
Q
Explain what happens in the telophase
A
- Nuclear envelopes reappear
- Cytokinesis is completed
- The cell continues to elongate, as free spindle fibres from each centrosome push off each other.
- Two nuclei begin to form, surrounded by the fragments of the parent’s nuclear envelope.
- Chromatin becomes less tightly coiled.
- Cytokinesis begins (division of the cytoplasm)
9
Q
List the 4 phases within the mitotic phase
A
Prophase/prometaphase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
10
Q
What are the factors involved in aging
A
- May be programmed genetically
- Protein cross-links by glucose - diabetes
- Free radical damage - antioxidants
- Cessation of mitosis - Hayflick Limit
