Topic 3- Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the 2 stages if photosynthesis?
The light dependant stage
Carbon fixation
What is photosynthesis?
He process through which green plants can turn light energy into chemical energy(food)
In which stage does a series of enzyme controlled reactions take place?
Both stages
What is the word equation for the light dependant stage?
Sunlight ⬇️absorbed by chlorophyll Oxygen⬅️Water➡️hydrogen ⬇️ ADP+Pi➡️ATP
What is the oxygen in the light dependant stage called?
A byproduct
Where does the oxygen go?
Released into the air
Where does the hydrogen go from the LD stage?
Into the carbon fixation stage
Where does the ATP go from the LD stage?
Into the carbon fixation stage
What happens to the light energy from the sun?
The light energy from the sub is trapped by a pigment found in the chloroplasts of leaf plant cells called chlorophyll
What happens to the trapped light energy?
The light energy is used to split a molecule of water into hydrogen and oxygen
What happens when the water splits?
Chemical energy (in the form of ATP) is made from ADP+Pi
What happens to the oxygen split from the water?
It diffuses out of the cell and into the atmosphere
What happens to the hydrogen split from the water?
It is picked up by a hydrogen acceptor molecule
What is a summary of the carbon fixation stage?
Carbon fixation involves a series of enzyme controlled reactions that convert the gas carbon dioxide into the sugar glucose
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide+water
Light energy⬇️chlorophyll
Glucose+Oxygen
What 3 things can the glucose produced be used for?
- Respiration
- Stored as starch
- Structural carbohydrate cellulose(in cell wall)
What is a limiting factor?
Something that holds up a process because it is in short supply
If light intensity is limited what stage would it effect?
The light dependant stage and because this stage doesn’t happen then there is no hydrogen or ATP for the second stage so that won’t be able to occur either
If carbon dioxide is limiting then which stage would it effect?
The carbon fixation stage
If temperature was limiting then which stage would this be effecting?
Both stages as the enzyme requiring reactions would be affected
