Topic 3 - Blood Vessels [6] Flashcards
Veins thin, what this mean
veins cant control blood flow
Arteries have thicker walls than veins… Why?
Prevent walls bursting from the high pressure required in arteries.
Arteries have a thicker Elastic Layer than Veins… Why?
So it can maintain blood pressure. Elasticity allow it to stretch and recoil in response to heart beat.
Arteries have a thicker Muscle Layer than Veins… Why?
so it can constrict and dilate for controlling blood volume
Capillaries wall thickness?
One cell thick, providing a short diffusion distance for exchanging material between the blood and the cells.
Capillaries elastic layer?
No elastic layer
what is capillaries muscle layer thickness?
no muscle layer
Arteries Arterioles Veins Capillaries Which ones have valves
Arteries
Veins
Veins have a thin everything… why?
Wall thin because Pressure is lower so low risk of bursting
E layer thin because pressure is lower
muscle layer is thin because no reason given, cannot control blood flow
Arterioles have a THINNER Elastic layer and wall thickness than Arteries… Why?
Pressure is lower in arterioles.
Arterioles have THICKER muscle layer than Arteries… Why?
To restrict blood flow into capillaries
Capillary beds have a narrow diameter, why?
slow blood flow. red blood cells can just barely fit in and this maximises diffusion.
capillaries form _________ ____ as exchange surfaces.
Capillary Beds
State order of vessels for transporting blood away from the heart
Arteries carry blood away from heart into arterioles.
Arterioles - connect to;
Capillaries - connect arterioles to veins
Veins carry blood back in heart
