What do information technology systems
Using information technology systems to store and transmit information in digital form always comes with threats to the the security and privacy of the data being used
What is Malware?
This is software designed to cause harm to your IT system, such as deleting, altering or stealing data
What is a Hacker?
A person who exploits weeaknesses in IT systems in order to gain un authorised access is known as a hacker.
This can be done to steal, alter and delete data from your systems.
(Theres are also ‘ethical hackers’ who are emplyed by companies to test defences and security)
What is Phishing?
A phishing email is one that pretends to be from a reputable company in order to get individuals to reveal personal informatio
What is a common type of Phishing?
A common phising email claims to be from a bank.
It instructs the user to click on a link and enter their bank details, supposedly for verification purposes, but really to steal the person’s bank details
What is Accidental damage?
Not all threats to individuals and businesses are malicious
A lot of damage is caused through human error, such as accidentally deleting or overwriting files on a computer, or spilling a drink on a device and damaging it
What are the 2 impact on individuals?
- Identity fraud
- Bank fraud
What is Identity fraud?

Identity fraud - the stolen personal infoemation is used to open bank accounts, obtain loans, take out mobile phone contracts
What is Bnak fraud?

Bnak fraud - A criminal user gians access to your bank account and uses it to withdraw cash and purchase items
What are the 2 impact on organisations?
- Loss of reputation
- Loss of income
What is Loss of reputation?
(impact on organisations)
Loss of reputation - a business affected by any of the issues will lose the confidence of customers, who will turn to other businesses that haven’t been affected.

Loss of income - during the down time caused by many of these threats, a business will not be able to carry out its normal business practices
