There are many different types of application software that have their own use
What are the 3 types of application software?
Productivity software
Graphical software
Communication software
What is the use of Productivity Software?
These are applications like word processs, deaktop publishers and spreadsheets that are used in office environments to support business tasks and improve efficiency
What is the use Graphics software?
These application are used to edit photos or create origianal artwork.
What is the use of Communication Software?
These applications make communicating quicker and easier.
They include instant messaging, email, and VOIP software.
What does Proprietary and Open source software?
These terms refer to who owns the source code behind the software
What is Proprietary software?
The source code is privately owned by the software company.
What do users do for Proprietary software?
Users pay to buy or subscibe to software
2 Advantages of Proprietary Software
Support (e.g. for setup and troubleshotting)
is provided by the software creators.
It may have more features than open source software
3 Disdvantages of Proprietary Software
The software company may be slow to provide updates and bug fixes
Software is usually very generic, with little scope for customisation due to copyright or complexity issuses
It can be costly
What is for Open Source software?
The source code is availiable to read and modify.
3 Advantages of Open source software
Most open source software is free to use, although many companies provide paid-for services to enhance and/or support open source.
Support and fixes are provided by community, often via forums.
OPen source software utility software is usually compatiable with other properietary utility software
2 Disdvantages of Open source software
Support with fast response may not be available when needed, as it relies on goodwill
There may be indirect costs involoved in paying for support and training
What to consider when Choosing software?
Ease to use - familiarity and ease of use is paramount
Reliablity - ensuring software works as intended and can be depended upon
Capability - that the software can do the job required of it and do it effectively
