Why are different file types used?
Different file types are used to denote the form, or structure, of the data stored withiin the file
What does the file extension tell users?
The file extension tells the user what type of data the file should contain.
It also tells the operating system which icon to display and which software to use to open the file when the user double clicks the icon.
State the 4 large file types.

BMP
PNG

What is BPM?
BPM = an uncompressed file format
so image quaility is extremely high but file size is very large
What does PNG use?
PNG = uses lossless compression to save high-quality images in a low file size.
Also allows transparency

What is DOC and RTF commonly used files for?
DOC and RTF are commonly used files formats for documents created using word processing software
What type of format is PDF?
PDF is a format that represents data independently of the originating software and/or hardware
Why is XLS a common format for and How are they created?
XLS = is a common format for files which are created using spreadsheet software
What is a ODF?
ODF = is an open source XML based format used to represent office files such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
What is a PPT?
PPT = is a common format for slideshows created using presentaion software
What are MDB and ACCDB?
MDB and ACCDB = is a common format type for database software.
What are the 4 Video file type?
AVI
MP4
MOV
MKV
What is a AVI?
AVI = Is uncompressed so it’s very high quality
but
very large file size
Not good for streaming
What is MP4?
MP4 = supports high-quality video while still compresses file size.
Works on a wide variety of devices and software.
What is MOV designed for?
What is the Benefits and Disavantage of MOV?
MOV = is designed for use with Apple QuickTime software
but
it can be played using other software.
it can provide high quality
but
can also be compressed
Good for streaming
What and What not does MKV support?
MKV does support high-quailty video playbacks
MKV does not support some devices like - IPads they can’t play .mkv files

Its the choice of file type or storage method of data has ongoing implications for individuals and organisations

Some files types only work with certain software
Why would compatibility be an issue?
May need to purchase new software.
sharing files with others who do not have the required software

Different images, video and audio file types provide varying levels of quality
Why would Quality be an issue?
Choice will depend on intended use of the files
e.g - is high quality the priority or small file size?
What is File Size?
The type of file size affects file size
some types are very efficient in the way they store data whereas others use lots of storage spaces
