Why are different file types used?
Different file types are used to denote the form, or structure, of the data stored withiin the file
What does the file extension tell users?
The file extension tells the user what type of data the file should contain.
It also tells the operating system which icon to display and which software to use to open the file when the user double clicks the icon.
State the 4 large file types.

BMP
PNG

JPG = although compression is lossy so files cannot be decompressed
What is BPM?
BPM = an uncompressed file format
so image quaility is extremely high but file size is very large
What does PNG use?
PNG = uses lossless compression to save high-quality images in a low file size.
Also allows transparency

What is DOC and RTF commonly used files for?
DOC and RTF are commonly used files formats for documents created using word processing software
What type of format is PDF?
PDF is a format that represents data independently of the originating software and/or hardware
Why is XLS a common format for and How are they created?
XLS = is a common format for files which are created using spreadsheet software
What is a ODF?
ODF = is an open source XML based format used to represent office files such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
What is a PPT?
PPT = is a common format for slideshows created using presentaion software
What are MDB and ACCDB?
MDB and ACCDB = is a common format type for database software.
