Topic 17 - Features Of Different Networks Flashcards
What are different types of network defined by?
Different types of network can be defined by their size
(personal, local, wide area network)
or by their purpose (virtual private network)
What is the Ethernet? (LAN)
Local area networks often use UTP/STP cabling in order to connect the devices although Wi-Fi can be used for a wireless connection
What does the network allow? (LAN)
The network allows resources like printers, files, internet and software to be shared by all computers on the LAN
What does the router do? (LAN)
The router might connect the LAN to the internet or, in this case, to a WAN

A LAN is a computer network that covers a single building or site.
What is a WAN?
A WAN id a computer network that converts a large geographical area such as a country or the whole world

What is Bluetooth commonly used to create?
Bluetooth is commonly used to create a PAN to connect all digital devices in a person’s workspace
for example connecting a mobile phone to a Bluetooth headset for hands-free operation
What does VPN create? (Virtual private network)
This network technology creates a secure network connection over a public network, usually the internet, by using encryption
What does VPN allow businesses to have?
This allows a business to have a secure wide area network without having to pay the high costs of constructing the physical network infrastructure as they can use the existing internet infrastructure
