Utility softwares are used to manage systems
What are utility software like?
Utilities are like a tool box to help us optimise and maintain our computer systems
What are many utilities software a part of?
Many utilities software are pre-installed as part of the operating system.
such as traceroute while others may be selected by the user and installed
such as antivirus scanners
Why are disk utiliites are designed?
Disk utilites are designed to maintain the performance of a computer’s disk drive
What is file compreessors?
Backing up very large files and sharing them online can be difficult.
This utility compresses files to reduce their size and decompresses them for later access
What should be regualerly want to do?
You regualerly want to back up files
Disadvantage of backing up?
This can be slow as a mannal process
What do backup allow you to do?
Backup utilities allow you to automate the backup process
What happends to disks over time? (DIsk Defragmeter)
Over time a computer’s disk drive becomjes fregmented, which slows down file access.
What does disk defragmenter recorganise?
This utility recorganises the data for quicker access, but is only required on a HDD when using windows (fat32/NTFS) file systems
Why are Network Utilites designed?
Network utilies designed to maintain good networks secure
What are open networks at risk from? (Firewalls)
Open networks are at risk from threats like hackers and worms.
Firewalls prevent unsuthorised access by moitoring and clacking suspicious traffic.
What does Antivirus prevent?
This utility prevents computers from receiving viruses and detects and removes viruses and detects and removes viruses that have already infected a systems
What do Traceroute allow you to do?
Traceroute allow you to display the path that data packets travel over an IP network to help diagnose problems
How many other utilities are there?
There is a huge range of utilites which do not fall under a particular category
